My name is Abigail Geer, and I want to be your Select Board member
I grew up in Maine, and graduated from Greely High School almost 20 years ago. Right as I was graduating my folks bought the house I live in now, so I’ve been coming home to Raymond every chance I get for almost 20 years.
Growing up in Maine I learned to always be on the lookout for ways to help out, and to always pitch in and do my part. My husband and I are excited to move home to Raymond, and now I’m looking for ways I can pitch in and help out.
Since graduating college I think I’ve lived in 10 towns! I’ve mostly lived in the Boston area, where it’s pretty normal to move around a lot, so I’ve seen what life is like in a lot of different towns and what towns do to make themselves attractive places to move to and exciting places to stay. I’ve worked in community building, schools, library systems, and in my own side gigs. I love work that has a positive social impact with lots of connections to people. I also have a degree in Library and Information science, and believe in the importance of good information as well as the important role that organizations like libraries play as community pillars that make towns livable.
There are a few things that have coalesced in my life to create a determination to serve my community through democracy.
The first thing is that I love listening to people, and as I’ve dug into DEI and anti-racism work in the last few years, listening and taking people’s experiences seriously is one of the things that has stuck with me the most.
The second thing is I’ve watched as our democracy and our communities have struggled to survive the last few years and I can see with my own two eyes how important government is to everyday life. I want to make sure that our town has government oriented towards helping people build great lives.
My desire to listen, and the impact I’ve seen government have in the last few years have combined with my Maine determination to look for ways to help out to create a deep commitment to serving my community to make sure that everyone in town knows they have someone on the board who will listen with interest and empathy and work on building a great place to live.
